Airtec Walls Chosen for UK's First Passivhaus Rural Social Housing Scheme

14 affordable dwellings, built to comply with the rigorous energy efficiency standards of the Passivhaus scheme and Code Level 4, have been built using Airtec aerated blocks.

Airtec aerated blocks from Thomas Armstrong (Concrete Blocks) Limited have been used in a groundbreaking, prestigious project to deliver 14 affordable dwellings in compliance with the Passivhaus standard and simultaneously meet the requirements of Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

This project in Wimbish, Essex by architects Parsons & Whittley was to deliver affordable dwellings to Passivhaus & Code 4 levels for Hastoe Housing Association and keep the design and build as simple as possible.

The Super-Insulated Masonry (SIM) wall method was chosen which comprises of Thomas Armstrong’s 190mm Airtec Standard 3.6N aerated block built with thin joint mortar and externally insulated with 285mm of Relius rendered insulation. This simple, robust method of building walls results in a construction with zero cold bridging and an extremely low u-value of 0.088 W/m2K.

Expert advice and supplies for the SIM walls came from Thinjoint Technology Ltd who were able to demonstrate how SIM walls were fast and simple to construct, robust, cost effective and repeatable and could achieve such exceptional thermal performance along with zero cold bridging. Furthermore the overall heat loss area was drastically reduced as it was possible to eliminate all unnecessary steps and staggers.

This has proven to be an exciting and groundbreaking exemplar project that could prove to be a blueprint for such developments for years to come.
