William Rainford (Holdings) Ltd contribute to the RIBA Stirling Prize 2014 winning Everyman Theatre

The newly built iconic Everyman Theatre in Liverpool has been awarded RIBA's prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize 2014. The main contractor Gilbert Ash and architect Haworth Tompkins chose to use our Insulite Premier concrete blocks from our William Rainford (Holdings) Ltd production facility at Aintree in this construction.

One of the main factors in the success of this building was the use of reclaimed bricks from the old theatre which was founded in 1964 in a former 19th century chapel. The theatre was closed in July 2011 and the demolition and rebuilding programme was then started on the same site.

Over 25,000 bricks form the highly prominent and decorative curved auditorium and are a functional key aspect of the building designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating which relies heavily on the benefits of thermal mass derived from concrete and masonry. The reclaimed and cleaned bricks from the old theatre’s demolition needed delivering to the tight city centre site and William Rainford provided a convenient solution by storing the bricks at our Aintree factory and then transporting them, when required, to the building site using our fleet of smaller delivery wagons.
