Airtec blocks now ISO 14001 approved!

Thomas Armstrong (Concrete Blocks) Ltd is proud to announce the following achievements for our range of Airtec aerated concrete blocks made at our Brompton-on-Swale site near Catterick in North Yorkshire:

  •       Certification to ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System
  •       Certification to ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System
  •       Category I ('Special Category') Manufacturing accreditation

BS EN ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management

All Airtec blocks are now fully approved to the BS EN ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems (certificate number 09/E001).

The certification process was a lengthy and complex undertaking requiring the design and implementation of a rigorous system of procedures, training methods and process controls to reduce and eliminate impacts on the environment. All aspects of our operation were scrutinised during this process, from the sources of raw materials right through to delivery of the finished blocks. All employees recognised the significance of gaining certification and to enhancing our environmental credentials and were fully committed to this at all times; be it at the operative or directorship level.

The Airtec production facility is the latest and most technologically advanced in the UK and uses entirely unique methods for maximising efficiency and eliminating wasted energy. In fact an entirely independent energy audit from the Carbon Trust showed that in all areas of the process, we were already employing best practice and the most energy-saving equipment and methods possible.

This certification allows all builders, architects and local authorities to use Airtec blocks in their public and private sector projects and gain maximum credits available in the ‘Code for Sustainable Homes’ or any other scheme where environmentally responsible sourcing of materials must be demonstrated.

This certification demonstrates our commitment to minimising impact on the environment whilst at the same time supporting local economies and local jobs. Gaining certification is not the end of this process but rather a starting point for continual improvement in environmental performance. Having now achieved our first ISO 14001 certification in  Thomas Armstrong (Holdings) Ltd, we are now commencing the process of rolling out this system across multiple sites within the group.

BS EN ISO 9001:2008 Quality Assurance Management

Since 2006, we have operated a Quality Assurance Management System certified to ISO 9001:2000 (certificate number 06/Q006) alongside our BBA Certification (certificate number 06/4309), which in itself requires its own Quality Assurance Plan. To successfully operate these two QA systems requires a rigorous system of product checking and testing to ensure that maximum quality and adherence to product requirements is met at all times.

Our Quality Assurance Management System underwent an in depth, 3-yearly review recently and has been re-certified to the very latest version of this international standard, BS EN ISO 9001:2008.

Eventually all holders of an ISO 9001 certificate will have to upgrade to this latest version of the standard, but we have ensured that our Airtec production facility complies with the very latest requirements by being amongst the first companies in our sector to achieve this.

Category I Manufacturing (in accordance with BS EN 771-4)

All Airtec products are manufactured under extremely robust and closely controlled systems in the most technologically advanced aerated concrete facility in the UK. This is further complemented by our BBA accreditation (certificate no. 06/4309), which requires regular and thorough audits of these systems to ensure product quality and compliance.

The Airtec production process also holds a certificate of ‘Factory Production Control’ to demonstrate compliance with the international technical standard for aerated concrete products (certificate number 06/36122), and to enable the CE marking of these products.

Using products made under Category I manufacturing systems allows the designer / engineer to use calculations that provide enhanced material strength and vertical loading figures, whether the project has been designed to BS 5628-1 or BS EN 1996-1 (Eurocode 6: ‘Design of Masonry Structures’).
